The Myth Behind Women and Bulking Up

I don’t want to lift weights because I’ll bulk up. I hear this all the time from the ladies I train. But is this really true? Let’s explore the myths behind women and bulking up.

So, in order to bulk up through weight lifting certain hormones, namely testosterone is needed. Since a women’s testosterone level is much lower than men’s, approximately 15 to 20 times less, they are not capable of building large muscles. In fact, women tend to lose inches when they strength train because muscle takes up less room than fat so they are more likely to tone up rather than bulk up. Research shows that women can add up to 30% lean muscle and end up looking thinner, feeling stronger and being firmer lifting weights.

In addition to increasing strength, weight training also helps prevent type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and increased blood cholesterol levels. It also helps you burn calories throughout the day and increases your metabolism. If women don’t build enough muscle they have an increased risk of osteoporosis later in life, as well as a reduction in muscle mass of about 2-5% per year.

So the answer is NO, women who lift weights will not bulk up, instead they will greatly benefit. That’s why I incorporate strength training into my routines at Lynnfield Boot Camp and I hope after reading this you will do the same.

Fitness Boot Camp Offers One Way to Get in Shape

In Lynnfield, some women want to bring their fitness routine to a new level.

In recent years, people have heard much about a looming obesity epidemic in the country. However, a large number of Americans are getting into physical fitness routines that can help them maintain good long term health.

In Lynnfield, some women who want to bring their physical fitness to new levels have been attending exercise boot camp classes held at the Centre Congregational Church on Summer Street.

Rebecca DiNitto LeSaffre owns the Lynnfield Women’s Boot Camp, which has been in operation for two years. The pace of exercise at boot camp is brisk, and these classes - on Monday, Wednesday and Friday - are held at 5:45 a.m. However, LeSaffre points out that all fitness levels are welcome - and that many people want the opportunity to get their workout done before heading to work as opposed to trying to squeeze it in at the end of the day.

A physical fitness boot camp routine will incorporate a number of areas, such as strength and flexibility training, cardiovascular work, core training and plyometrics, which uses boxes for jumping exercises. “The goal is to give you a total body workout,” said LeSaffre.

LeSaffre reports that she likes to change her routines regularly as a further benefit to clients. “I try to change it up so people don’t plateau,” she said. Some women in her class have been going for two years, while others only joined several weeks ago.

The boot camp is just one of LeSaffre’s current endeavors. She is a married mother of two who currently lives in Melrose and in May will graduate from a full-time physical therapy assistant program.

She also holds a personal training certification from the American College of Sports Medicine, as well as certifications as a fitness nutrition coach and boot camp instructor. LeSaffre has been a fitness professional for five years and has held women’s boot camp at the church in Lynnfield for the past two years.

The physical therapy training gives LeSaffre the added benefit of being able to promote safe exercising techniques among her clients and to help them avoid injuries.

While the Lynnfield boot camp is meant for women, LeSaffre also points out that men have some local options if they want to give the fitness routine a try. She has partnered with another trainer with co-ed boot camp classes now offered in Melrose and Malden.

“Women are most likely to take group exercise classes,” explains LeSaffre, “They enjoy that camaraderie with other women.”
